October is a transitional month in Tanzania that rewards those who know where to focus. The Great Migration begins its southward return through the central Serengeti, whale shark season at Mafia Island is at peak reliability, Zanzibar is still excellent before the November rains, and the country’s landscapes begin to green as the short rains arrive in the final weeks of the month. Prices are falling from peak levels, and the parks are noticeably quieter than July–September.

Wildlife in October
Central Serengeti: The wildebeest herds have largely left the northern Serengeti and are dispersing southward through the central and western Serengeti. The Seronera Valley’s resident lions, leopards, and cheetahs are prominent as the migration column passes through. This is a productive period for predator-focused game drives in the central Serengeti.
Northern Serengeti: The rear guard of the migration is still in the north in early October, and some crossings may still occur. By mid-to-late October, the main body of the migration has moved south, and the northern Serengeti enters a quieter period before the short-rains grass flush.
Tarangire National Park: Tarangire begins its dramatic transition in October. The first rains trigger a dispersal of elephants back to seasonal water sources across the ecosystem — by late October the massive dry-season concentrations are beginning to thin. This creates a window in early October for the last of the legendary Tarangire elephant experience.
Mafia Island: October is the best month for whale shark snorkelling in Tanzania. The whale sharks aggregate in the Mafia Channel in significant numbers from October, and the combination of warm, calm seas and high whale shark density makes this the peak month. A dedicated Mafia Island trip in October is one of Africa’s most rewarding marine wildlife experiences.
Ngorongoro Crater: Excellent in early October, with the short rains bringing fresh green to the crater floor from mid-month. The grazing herbivores disperse slightly with fresh grass, but predator sightings remain strong.
Kilimanjaro: October is still a reasonable trekking month, particularly in the first half. Afternoon cloud begins building on the summit in October. The September–October window is the end of the primary climbing season before the November short rains.
Events in October
- Tanzania’s World Tourism Day follow-on events (mid-October) — special promotions and cultural events at major parks and lodges
- Eid al-Fitr — may fall in October depending on the Islamic calendar; celebrated on Zanzibar and in coastal towns with markets and communal prayers
- Whale Shark Festival (Mafia Island) — informal local events celebrating the whale shark arrival; ask locally in Kilindoni for current festival dates
- Mafia Island Marine Park whale shark guides — the park’s certified snorkelling guides are fully operational from October; approximately USD 35–60 per person for a guided whale shark swim
Crowds and Pricing
October is a shoulder-to-low season month with prices falling from peak levels. The first half of October still has good conditions and moderate pricing. The second half sees prices drop further as the short rains arrive. Accommodation availability is generally good, even for quality options.
Typical costs:
- Mid-range tented camp, central Serengeti: approximately USD 200–350 per person/night, full board
- Luxury lodge, central Serengeti: approximately USD 500–800 per person/night, all-inclusive
- Mafia Island lodge: approximately USD 200–400 per person/night, full board
- Zanzibar beach hotel: approximately USD 150–300 per room/night (falling from peak)
Best Activities in October
- Whale shark snorkelling, Mafia Island — peak month; highest concentration and most reliable sightings
- Central Serengeti predator drives — migration column passing through; Seronera predators at their most active
- Tarangire (early October) — last of the elephant dry-season concentration
- Ngorongoro Crater — excellent predator sightings in the fresh green landscape
- Zanzibar — east coast kite surfing (Paje/Jambiani) — the vuli short rains bring new wind patterns; kite surfing conditions can be good in October
Where to Go in October
First choice: Mafia Island — the peak whale shark month. Mafia is a small island with limited accommodation, so book 3–4 months ahead. A 3-night trip focused on morning snorkel sessions delivers the best whale shark results.
Second choice: Central Serengeti — the migration is passing through, predator viewing is excellent, and crowds are well below peak. The Seronera area is excellent value in October.
Zanzibar: Still a good choice, particularly in the first two weeks before the short rains settle in. The north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) handles the short rains better than the east coast in October.

FAQs
Is October the best month for whale sharks in Tanzania? October is consistently the most reliable month for whale shark sightings at Mafia Island. The sharks aggregate in the protected Mafia Channel in substantial numbers, and the combination of calm seas and high concentration makes October the peak. The season runs October–March, with October–February being the most reliable.
Is the Serengeti good in October? The first half of October is excellent — the migration column is passing through the central Serengeti and predator activity is high. The second half becomes more variable as the short rains begin. Seronera holds up well regardless; the far northern Serengeti becomes quieter and some migration-specific camps close.
Can I see rhino in Tanzania in October? Yes — Ngorongoro Crater has the most accessible black rhino population in Tanzania, and October is a good viewing month. The combination of short rains bringing fresh vegetation and the concentration of animals on the crater floor makes October one of the better rhino months.

Frequently Asked Questions
- When is the best time for whale sharks at Mafia Island?
- Whale sharks are present at Mafia Island from around August through February, with October and November considered the peak months. The Mafia Island Marine Park channel concentrates the animals, and snorkelling encounters at 1–5 metres depth are common during this period. October combines peak whale shark activity with calm sea conditions before the short rains arrive, making it an ideal time for Mafia Island visits.
- What is the Serengeti like in October as migration moves south?
- By October the wildebeest herds are moving south through the central and eastern Serengeti, retracing their annual clockwise circuit back toward the southern plains and the promise of new grass from the short rains. The Mara River crossings have largely ended, but the spectacle of hundreds of thousands of animals on the move across the open plains is still impressive. Resident predators are well-fed and active.
- Is October still dry in Tanzania?
- Most of October is still dry across Tanzania, a continuation of the long dry season. The short rains (vuli) typically arrive in late October or early November, starting on the coast and Zanzibar before spreading inland. In most safari years, October offers reliable sunny weather through to around the 20th–25th, after which afternoon showers become more likely. It's generally a safe bet for dry weather.
- Is October good value for Tanzania?
- Yes. October marks the transition from peak to shoulder season, and many lodges begin reducing their rates from mid-October onward as the migration crossings end. The parks are quieter than July–September and prices are noticeably lower, while wildlife remains excellent. For budget-conscious travellers who want dry conditions, October (especially the first three weeks) offers a compelling combination of quality and value.
