Embassies and Consulates in Tanzania: Where to Go for Help

Passport, compass and city map laid out on a world map for trip planning

Most visits never need an embassy, but knowing where to turn saves hours when something goes wrong. Dodoma is the official capital, but nearly every foreign mission sits in Dar es Salaam. Details below come from official government listings; confirm them before you travel, because phone numbers and opening hours change.

Several missions work by appointment only, so do not turn up unannounced. The UK asks for emergency contact through the GOV.UK form. The US Embassy lists an after-hours emergency line of +255 22 229-4000, and the Canadian High Commission lists +255 22 216-3300 for general and consular enquiries. Australia’s Dar es Salaam post is headed by an honorary consul and does not issue passports. Full consular help for Australians comes from the High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya. Other EU citizens should check their own foreign ministry site.

Zanzibar and the northern safari circuit are a flight from Dar es Salaam. See our Dar es Salaam city guide or browse Dar es Salaam tours if you have a day in the city.

What embassies can do

  • Issue emergency travel documents if your passport is lost or stolen
  • Contact family or friends on your behalf
  • Give lists of local doctors, hospitals and English-speaking lawyers
  • Visit or advise you if you are arrested, and make sure you are treated fairly
  • Advise on evacuation and safety in a crisis

They cannot pay for flights, hotel or medical bills, get you out of jail, or intervene in local legal cases. Strong travel insurance covers what embassies will not.

Emergencies first

For immediate danger in Tanzania, call the police first, and register with your government’s traveller alert service before you fly if it has one. Save your embassy details offline. Our safety tips page lists other emergency contacts worth screenshotting.

Lost or stolen passport: step by step

  1. Report the loss or theft to the nearest police station and request a written report.
  2. Contact your embassy or high commission by the official channel and book an appointment if required.
  3. Bring passport photos, a copy of your old passport or other ID, and your flight details.
  4. Apply for an emergency travel document, which is valid for a short, direct trip home.
  5. Check your visa status with Tanzania Immigration. Our Tanzania visa guide explains e-Visa rules, since a replacement passport may need the visa transferred.

Keep digital copies of your passport and visa in cloud storage before you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the embassies in Tanzania?
Most foreign missions are in Dar es Salaam, even though Dodoma is the official capital. The US, UK, Canadian and German missions are all in Dar es Salaam. Australia has only a limited honorary consulate there.
What should I do if my passport is stolen in Tanzania?
Report it to the local police and get a written report. Then contact your embassy or high commission for an emergency travel document. Bring photos, ID evidence and a copy of your itinerary.
Can an embassy lend me money or pay for a hospital bill?
Generally no. Embassies can help you contact family and point you to doctors or lawyers. They do not pay bills, so keep valid travel insurance.
