Where to Stay on Mafia Island: Every Lodge and Guesthouse with 2026 Prices

Mafia Island has one of the smallest accommodation inventories of any well-known dive destination in Africa. Four eco-lodges with a combined capacity of fewer than 80 guests, plus a handful of basic guesthouses in Kilindoni town — that is the full range. There are no international hotel brands, no all-inclusive resorts, and no backpacker hostels outside the capital.

This limitation is part of Mafia’s appeal. The Marine Park restrictions on development have kept the accommodation footprint small, which keeps visitor numbers low, which keeps the reefs and beaches in the condition that makes the island worth visiting.

Budget: Kilindoni Town Guesthouses

Kilindoni is Mafia’s only town of any size — the administrative centre, the location of the airport, the ferry terminal, and the main market. It sits on the western coast, 14 km from the Utende lodge cluster. Staying in Kilindoni rather than at a lodge requires hiring transport for any beach or diving activity, which adds cost and logistical complexity. For travellers on a tight budget willing to handle this, it is the practical option.

Lizu Beach Guesthouse (Kilindoni): The most frequently recommended budget option in town. Basic clean rooms with fans, a small terrace, and an attached restaurant serving local Swahili meals (fish, rice, ugali). From approximately TZS 50,000–80,000 per room per night (about USD 18–30 as of 2026). The owners speak basic English and can help with transport and tour arrangements.

Mafia Guest House (Kilindoni centre): A central location close to the market and port. Rooms with fan from approximately TZS 40,000–60,000. Shared bathrooms in some rooms. Popular with Tanzanian government workers and visiting traders. Not oriented to international visitors but functional and inexpensive.

Mafia Island Paradise Hotel (Kilindoni): The most comfortable option in the budget-to-mid bracket in town. Air-conditioned rooms from approximately TZS 90,000–130,000 per night (USD 33–48). Restaurant on site with a broader menu including chicken, fish, and vegetables. Can arrange vehicle hire to Utende.

Transport from Kilindoni to Utende: Hire a vehicle for approximately TZS 30,000–50,000 each way (USD 11–18), 30–40 minute drive. Or arrange a day-trip package with a dive operator — most can pick you up from Kilindoni and drop you back after a dive or whale shark tour.

Mid-Range: Limited Options

There is almost no accommodation filling the gap between the basic Kilindoni guesthouses and the USD 250+ eco-lodges. The closest option:

Butiama Beach Lodge (Utende): The most accessible of the Utende lodges in terms of price. Simple but comfortable thatched bandas on the beachfront. The atmosphere is relaxed — a popular choice for dive-focused travellers who want beach access without the premium of Kinasi or Pole Pole. From approximately USD 150–200 per person per night, full board. The lodge has its own dhow for snorkel excursions and works closely with Big Blue Ocean for dive trips. The beach in front is good for swimming and the reef is reachable by snorkel at high tide.

Butiama Beach is the most straightforward choice for divers who want the full Mafia experience — lodge on the beach, dive centre nearby, Marine Park access — without spending USD 400+ per person.

Eco-Lodges: Mafia’s Flagship Properties

Kinasi Lodge (Utende): The longest-established eco-lodge on Mafia. 12 palm-thatched chalets arranged on a hillside above Chole Bay, each with a private veranda and sea view. The lodge has a strong conservation ethos — it contributed to the establishment of the Marine Park and continues reef monitoring work.

From approximately USD 280–380 per person per night, full board. Rates include all meals, snorkelling equipment, kayaks, and one guided reef snorkel per stay. Diving is arranged through Big Blue Ocean and charged separately (approximately USD 110–125 per two-tank dive). Whale shark tours are included in season packages. The lodge is closed during the long rains (approximately mid-April to mid-June).

Kinasi’s restaurant is open to non-guests at lunch by advance reservation. The terrace above Chole Bay is one of the most scenic dining spots on the island.

Pole Pole Lodge (Utende): Sits at the southern end of the Utende waterfront. Eight garden bandas in a coconut palm grove, all with private bathrooms and open-air showers. The architecture is deliberately understated — built from local materials with solar power and composting systems. The house reef in front of the lodge extends 200 metres offshore and has good coral and turtle sightings.

From approximately USD 250–320 per person per night, full board. Pole Pole has a strong repeat-guest following — some guests return for two or three stays. Book well ahead for June–October. Works with local dive operators for dive packages.

Chole Mjini Lodge (Chole Island): The most distinctive accommodation on Mafia — six open-sided treehouses built into and around the 14th–19th century Swahili ruins on Chole Island, 500 metres across the bay from Utende. Meals are cooked over wood fire and served at a communal table; the food is known as the best on the island.

From approximately USD 450–550 per person per night, full board. This is among the most expensive lodges in Tanzania and the price reflects absolute exclusivity — a maximum of 12 guests on the island at any time. There are no locks on the treehouse rooms (the island has no visitors except lodge guests). No pool, no air conditioning — ocean breeze and ceiling fans. The lodge funds a community school and medical clinic on Chole Island.

Chole Mjini is reached by the 500-metre canoe crossing from the Utende waterfront. This means diving and whale shark trips require a short boat crossing before boarding the dive boat — slightly more complex logistics, but most guests find the setting worth it.

Practical Notes for All Mafia Accommodation

Power supply: All four eco-lodges run on solar with generator backup. Kilindoni has mains electricity but outages are common. Bring a portable power bank.

Mobile data: Vodacom and Airtel have coverage in Kilindoni and basic coverage at Utende. Signal quality varies. Satellite internet at the eco-lodges is slow. Plan to be largely offline.

What to bring: Most lodges provide snorkel equipment but quality varies. If you own a mask, bring it. Dive equipment is provided by the dive operators. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — the Marine Park actively enforces restrictions on chemical sunscreens.

Getting there: Coastal Aviation and Auric Air run scheduled light aircraft flights from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Airport in Kilindoni (approximately 30–40 minutes). Fares from approximately USD 120–180 each way. All lodges arrange airport pick-up — confirm timing when booking. A ferry service from Nyamisati on the mainland coast also operates (irregular schedule, 2–3 hours, used mainly by locals).
