Mafia Island Travel Guide: Whale Sharks, Diving & Marine Park

Mafia Island sits 130 km south of Dar es Salaam and 160 km southwest of Zanzibar. It is Tanzania’s most remote major island and, in some respects, its most ecologically significant. The Mafia Island Marine Park — gazetted in 1995 and covering approximately 822 km² of reef, seagrass, and mangrove — protects one of the richest marine ecosystems in the western Indian Ocean.

The island itself measures roughly 50 km by 15 km. There are no traffic lights, one ATM (not always working), and a handful of lodges. The visitors who come tend to be divers, snorkellers, and people specifically here for the whale sharks. If that is you, it is arguably the best destination in East Africa.

Whale Sharks

Mafia Island is one of a very small number of places in Africa where you can reliably snorkel alongside whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). The animals congregate around the Kilindoni area from approximately October to March, feeding on plankton-rich water pushed up by seasonal currents.

Organised whale shark snorkel trips depart from Kilindoni and the main lodges. Boat captains locate the animals by watching for surface disturbance and coordinating by radio with other boats. Participants slip in and snorkel — no scuba, as the animals respond better to surface swimmers.

Kinasi Lodge and Pole Pole Resort both operate whale shark trips for guests and have guides trained in ethical interaction: maintain 4 metres distance, no flash photography, no touching. Prices range from approximately USD 80–120 per person for a half-day trip (as of 2026).

The Marine Park

Mafia Island Marine Park charges an entry fee of approximately USD 20 per person per day for non-residents (as of 2026). This covers access to all dive and snorkel sites within the park boundary. Your lodge or dive operator will handle payment on your behalf.

The main dive zones:

Chole Bay: The sheltered bay between Mafia and the smaller Chole Island. Shallow sites here (5–18 metres) are suitable for beginners and have abundant reef fish, nudibranchs, and turtles.

Ras Kisimani: The southern tip of Mafia, exposed to open ocean. Deeper walls dropping to 35+ metres with regular pelagic action — barracuda, eagle rays, trevally. For experienced divers only; currents can be strong.

Utende Reef: The main house reef accessed from Kinasi and Pole Pole lodges. Excellent soft coral and consistent turtle sightings, 8–25 metres. Suitable for all dive levels.

Chole Island: A small uninhabited island in Chole Bay with ruined 19th-century warehouses on shore and shallow coral gardens in the surrounding water. A dhow trip to Chole for snorkelling costs approximately USD 30–50 per person.

Where to Stay

There are five main lodges on Mafia. All are small (under 20 rooms) and rates are typically full board or half board, since dining options outside the lodges are extremely limited.

Kinasi Lodge: The longest-established lodge on Mafia. 14 bandas (thatched chalets) set on a hillside overlooking Chole Bay. Full-board rates from approximately USD 350 per person per night (as of 2026). Has its own PADI dive centre and runs whale shark trips.

Pole Pole Resort: A smaller eco-lodge (10 bandas) between Kinasi and the beach. Known for excellent food and a relaxed pace. Full-board from approximately USD 380 per person per night. Dive centre on-site.

Mafia Island Lodge: Older-style lodge with basic chalets near Utende. Half-board from approximately USD 180 per person per night. The most affordable option with direct beach access.

Butiama Beach Lodge: The newest mid-range property. Simpler rooms, a good beachfront restaurant. From approximately USD 130 per room per night.

Budget accommodation in Kilindoni town (the ferry landing): a handful of guesthouses charge USD 20–40 per room. Access to dive sites from here requires a boat journey.

Diving Operators

Kinasi Lodge Dive Centre and Pole Pole both run PADI dive operations. Two-tank dives cost approximately USD 120–140 including equipment. PADI Open Water courses run approximately USD 500–550. Non-divers (snorkel only) join boat trips for approximately USD 30–50.

Getting There

By air: The only practical way. Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and ZanAir run small-plane services from Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport to Mafia Island Airport (MFA) near Kilindoni. Journey time: approximately 30 minutes. Fares from approximately USD 150 one-way. Services typically operate daily in high season (June–October) but reduce in low season — confirm schedules in advance.

Charter flights can also be arranged from Zanzibar through Coastal Aviation.

By dhow: Not recommended. Dhows from Nyamisati on the mainland coast occasionally take passengers, but the crossing is unscheduled, rough, and takes 5–8 hours depending on wind. Medical evacuation from a dhow is not feasible.

Practical Notes

• The only ATM is in Kilindoni and frequently runs out of cash. Bring sufficient USD for your stay.
• All lodges accept credit cards but may charge a processing fee.
• Mobile coverage: limited. Vodacom works in Kilindoni; signal drops near the lodges.
• Malaria is present on Mafia Island. Take prophylaxis, use a treated mosquito net, and apply repellent at dusk.
• No government hospital on the island — the clinic in Kilindoni handles minor issues only. Serious medical emergencies require evacuation to Dar es Salaam.
• Marine Park fees must be paid in USD cash if your lodge does not handle it in advance.
• Respect Chole Bay’s designated marine protected zones — anchoring is prohibited over coral, and your captain will know the coordinates.
