September is one of Tanzania’s most versatile months. The Mara River crossings continue, the Tarangire elephant gathering reaches maximum intensity, whale shark season begins at Mafia Island, and Zanzibar enters its most beautiful period of the year — warm, clear, and calm. September offers peak dry-season wildlife at slightly lower prices than August, making it a compelling alternative to the busiest month.

September rainfall is minimal across Tanzania’s safari areas. The short rains don’t arrive until late October or November. Temperatures begin to warm slightly from the July–August coolness. The Indian Ocean around Zanzibar and Mafia Island settles as the southeast trade winds ease, creating excellent diving and snorkelling conditions.

Wildlife in September

Northern Serengeti: Mara River crossings continue through September. The herds are still in the north, though some advance columns begin moving south as grass is depleted in the far north. The crossings remain dramatic — Nile crocodiles that have fed intensively through July–August are still active and present at crossing sites. September can be the best month for the famous “return crossings” where large columns swim back across the river.

Tarangire National Park: September is the Tarangire elephant peak. The Tarangire River is at its lowest, concentrating both wildlife and elephants in spectacular density. Herds of 200–300+ elephants sharing the river banks with lions, leopards, and countless smaller species make this one of Africa’s most underrated dry-season spectacles.

Ngorongoro Crater: September is excellent — warm, clear mornings with good light for photography. The resident wildlife is concentrated and highly visible. The spring rains bring fresh grazing that attracts the flamingo population back to the crater’s soda lake (Lake Magadi).

Mafia Island: The whale shark season begins in earnest in September. The whale sharks arrive in the Mafia Channel from October, but sightings begin as early as late September. Mafia Island Marine Park is one of the world’s most reliable whale shark snorkelling destinations — the protected shallow channel provides a feeding ground that aggregates significant numbers of whale sharks through the season.

Kilimanjaro: September is statistically the clearest summit month. Some climbers find that October–November bring afternoon cloud that reduces visibility. September’s combination of clear skies, firm summit ice, and post-August crowd reduction makes it arguably the single best month to summit Kilimanjaro.

September is significantly quieter than August despite comparable wildlife quality. Prices begin declining from peak levels, particularly toward the end of September as the high season officially winds down. Where to Go in September

First choice: Northern Serengeti — Mara crossings continue, and September’s lower visitor numbers make crossing positions easier to secure. The Lamai Triangle and Kogatende remain the best areas.

Second choice: Tarangire — peak elephant month. A Tarangire-focused trip in September is one of the most dramatic wildlife experiences in Africa and dramatically underbooked compared to the northern Serengeti.

Coast: Zanzibar or Mafia Island — September is the most beautiful month on both islands. Zanzibar’s Mnemba Atoll is exceptional for snorkelling. Mafia Island is the choice for whale shark seekers, with the season just opening.
