August is the peak of Tanzania’s peak season. The Mara River crossings are at maximum frequency, the Tarangire elephant concentration reaches its annual height, every major safari circuit is producing outstanding wildlife, and Zanzibar is in its most pleasant dry season. It is Tanzania’s most expensive and most booked month - but for good reason. August delivers consistently spectacular wildlife viewing across the entire country.

August is statistically Tanzania’s driest month in most regions. Dust on game drive tracks is at its maximum. The lack of cloud cover makes for superb photographic light - warm, clear mornings and spectacular golden-hour sunsets across the Serengeti.
Multiple Mara River Crossings Daily; Peak Tarangire Elephant Concentrations
Northern Serengeti (Kogatende/Lamai Triangle): August sees the highest frequency of Mara River crossings. The entire wildebeest column - 1.5 million animals - is in the north, and the herds move restlessly between the Tanzanian and Kenyan sides of the river. Multiple crossings per day are common in August; witnessing two or three in a single morning session is possible. Nile crocodiles are enormous and conspicuous, waiting below the crossing points. Lion prides gorge themselves on calves and stragglers. Cheetahs and leopards are highly visible.
Tarangire National Park: August is the peak of the Tarangire elephant phenomenon. As the dry season intensifies, elephants from across the surrounding ecosystem converge on the permanent Tarangire River. Herds of 100–300 elephants gathering at the river are not unusual. Combined with the park’s iconic baobab trees and predator population, August in Tarangire is arguably Tanzania’s second-most-spectacular wildlife event after the Mara crossings.
Ngorongoro Crater: The crater floor is parched and animals concentrate around the remaining springs. Black rhino are reliably sighted at Ngoitokitok spring area. Lions, hyenas, and jackals patrol the open floor. Hippos in the Mandusi swamp are packed densely. August is statistically one of the best months for large predator sightings in Ngorongoro.
Selous (Nyerere National Park): The dry season is at its most intense in the Selous. Walking safaris produce the most dramatic encounters as wildlife congregates at the Rufiji River. Wild dog packs - the Selous holds one of Africa’s largest wild dog populations - are particularly active and visible in August.
Kilimanjaro: The primary climbing season continues in August. Good summit conditions, clear views, and well-maintained routes. The busiest month for climbers - expect encounters with other trekking groups on popular routes. Book operators and permits 4–6 months ahead.

Best Destinations in August: Northern Serengeti Non-Negotiable; Tarangire for Elephants
For the migration: Northern Serengeti - non-negotiable. No other experience in Tanzania or Africa matches peak August crossing season in the Kogatende area. A 4–5 night stay gives multiple crossing opportunities.
For elephants: Tarangire - pairs perfectly with the northern Serengeti circuit. A 2-night Tarangire addition before or after Serengeti time gives the elephant experience alongside the migration.
