Nyerere National Park: Boat Safaris in October 2026

Nyerere National Park β€” Tanzania’s largest protected area and formerly known as Selous Game Reserve β€” enters its prime visitor window this October as the Rufiji River drops to its dry-season level, concentrating elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and buffalo along its banks. Boat safaris are operating daily from all three main camps inside the park.

Why October Stands Out at Nyerere

The Rufiji River system reaches its annual low point between September and November, revealing sandbanks that attract large gatherings of hippos and Nile crocodiles. Elephants move to the river in the afternoons to drink and bathe, making late-afternoon boat departures particularly productive for wildlife sightings. Lions are also regularly seen along the riverine woodland at this time of year.

Unlike Tanzania’s northern circuit parks, Nyerere sees a fraction of the visitor numbers even during peak season, meaning genuine wilderness experiences are still possible. The park covers 50,000 square kilometres β€” larger than Switzerland β€” and most of it remains inaccessible to ordinary visitors.

Boat Safari Logistics and Costs

Boat safaris on the Rufiji River typically run two to three hours and depart in the early morning and late afternoon from camp jetties. Prices vary by operator:

  • Jongomero Camp (exclusive): from USD 120 per person, guests only
  • Siwandu Camp: from USD 110 per person, guests only
  • Selous Safari Company camps: from USD 95 per person for day visitors by arrangement

The park entrance fee is USD 50 per person per 24-hour period for non-residents, payable at the main gate. A TANAPA-approved guide is compulsory for all activities.

Getting to Nyerere

Scheduled charter flights connect Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport with Jongomero airstrip in about 55 minutes. Coastal Aviation and Auric Air both operate this route, with return fares around USD 280 to 350. A road transfer from Dar takes five to seven hours on a mostly unpaved road and is only recommended in a robust 4WD vehicle.

Most visitors combine Nyerere with the northern circuit β€” a common pairing is two nights at Nyerere followed by the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater for a full 10-day Tanzania safari.
