February sits at the heart of Tanzania’s short dry season and is often the best single month to visit the southern Serengeti. Calving season is at its absolute peak, Zanzibar is warm and largely dry, Kilimanjaro weather remains excellent, and Zanzibar’s Sauti za Busara music festival, normally held this month, moves to 19-21 March in 2027 because of Ramadan.

February is Tanzania’s driest and hottest month on the northern circuit. Rainfall is minimal across the country’s main safari areas. It is one of two optimal months to summit Kilimanjaro (alongside September).
Calving Peak at Ndutu: 8,000 Wildebeest Calves Per Day and Intense Predator Action
Southern Serengeti (Ndutu area): February is the single best month for calving season. The short-grass plains around Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek are carpeted with wildebeest calves, and the predator activity is extraordinary. Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are conspicuous and hunting daily. Wild dog sightings - always rare - are at their annual peak during the February denning and birthing period.
Ngorongoro Crater: The crater floor is recovering from the November short rains, creating a vivid green landscape. The resident population of approximately 25,000 animals is concentrated on the crater floor. February is one of the most reliable months for sighting black rhino - Tanzania holds approximately 200 of Africa’s critically endangered eastern black rhino, and Ngorongoro has the highest density.
Zanzibar: February is optimal for Zanzibar. The Indian Ocean is calm, visibility for snorkelling and diving is excellent, and temperatures are warm but not oppressive. Mnemba Atoll snorkelling is at its best - the reef is clear and undisturbed.
Kilimanjaro: The clear February skies make this one of the best months for summit attempts. The Lemosho and Machame routes see firm ground and minimal ice on the upper sections. Booking slots fill quickly - reserve 3–6 months ahead.
Mafia Island: Whale shark season continues. February snorkelling conditions are typically excellent - calm, warm water with 20–30m visibility.
Zanzibar in February: Beaches, Diving, and Stone Town
February is one of Zanzibar’s finest months for a combined beach and cultural visit. The Indian Ocean reaches its warmest - water temperatures of 29–30°C - and visibility at Mnemba Atoll regularly exceeds 25–28m, among the clearest of the year. The island is busy but below the Christmas peak.
Beaches in February: The north coast (Nungwi and Kendwa) remains calm and reliably warm. The east coast (Paje and Jambiani) sees the strongest southeast trade winds of the year building through February, ideal for kite surfing but less suited to calm swimming. For snorkelling and diving, the north and northeast coast (Matemwe, Nungwi) are the better bases. The Matemwe coastline offers quieter beach access and is 20–30 minutes from Mnemba Atoll by boat.
Diving in February: February offers the best diving visibility of the year at most Zanzibar sites. Mnemba Atoll’s outer reef walls in February regularly see 25–30m visibility, with spotted eagle rays, green turtles, and hawksbill turtles reliably present at 10–20m. The shallow inside reef (5–15m) has dense schooling fish - fusiliers, parrotfish, and wrasse - making it excellent for snorkelling and beginner diving. Night dives (USD 60–80 per dive) in February are particularly rewarding: octopus, moray eels, lionfish, and the spectacular Spanish dancer nudibranch are common encounters. Stone Town in February - Sauti za Busara: The Sauti za Busara music festival, held at the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe) and usually in February (19-21 March in 2027, moved for Ramadan and Eid), is the cultural highlight of Zanzibar’s calendar. This four-day open-air event draws performers from across the Swahili coast and East Africa for evening concerts in the stone-walled fort courtyard. Day passes cost approximately USD 15–40; full festival passes run USD 80–120. The narrow streets around the Old Fort become a food and artisan crafts market during festival days. Shoulder Season Rates: 10–20% Below Peak Despite the Best Calving Conditions
February is a shoulder month with prices typically 10–20% below the July–September peak. The calving season is becoming better-known but remains significantly less crowded than the northern Serengeti in peak migration season. The Ndutu area fills quickly during late February - book lodges 3–4 months ahead.
Zanzibar prices are moderate in February; the post-Christmas surge has passed but in a normal year Sauti za Busara week sees Stone Town hotels book out quickly (in 2027 that crush shifts to 19-21 March).
