What the numbers mean
All prices are approximate, as of 2026, and vary by season and operator. Treat them as planning ranges, not quotes.
- Accommodation: Guesthouses in Arusha, Moshi and Stone Town start at approximately $20-50 a night. Safari lodges and tented camps inside or beside the parks run from approximately $90 to $1,000+ a night, with a steep peak-season premium (July to October, and the Christmas period).
- Food: A nyama choma or rice-and-beans plate costs approximately $2-5. Tourist restaurants in Zanzibar and Arusha run approximately $10-20 a meal. Full-board lodge meals are usually bundled into the room rate.
- Activities: This is the big variable. Park fees alone are approximately $45-100 per person per day, and group safaris run from approximately $150 a day. Averaged across a trip that includes rest days, we use $40-150 a day. A safari-heavy itinerary will sit at the top of the range or above it.
- Transport: Dalla-dalla minibuses and buses cost a few dollars a trip, taxis and ride-hailing in Dar es Salaam and Arusha approximately $3-15, and a domestic flight or ferry to Zanzibar approximately $40-150. Safari transport is normally included in your operator price.
- Not included: International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips (approximately $15-20 per guide per day is standard) and Kilimanjaro or other trekking packages, which are priced separately. Exact fees change often, so check them with your operator.
