The accommodation scene is practical rather than glamorous. How Long to Stay in Dodoma
Most travellers spend one night, using Dodoma as a transit break. For the Kondoa Rock Art Sites, a two-night stay makes more sense - one night before and one after the day trip north. Those visiting parliament or attending conferences often stay three to five nights; the city’s business hotels cater well to extended stays.
Neighbourhoods: Where to Be Based
City Centre (Makole / Jacaranda area): The most practical location for most visitors. Government ministries, the bus station, the central market, and the majority of mid-range hotels are all within a 15-minute walk of each other. The area around Jacaranda Street and the main roundabout has the best concentration of restaurants and shops. Noise levels are moderate - the city is calmer than Dar es Salaam or Mwanza.
Hazina / High Court area: A slightly quieter residential-commercial zone north-east of the city centre. A handful of mid-range guesthouses here cater to government consultants and NGO visitors. Easy walking distance to the main government buildings and National Assembly.
Outskirts (Airport Road corridor): The road connecting the city centre to Dodoma Airport has seen a cluster of newer guesthouses and small hotels open in the past five years. Practical Information
Getting to Dodoma by bus: The main bus station is a short walk from most city-centre hotels. Buses run daily from Dar es Salaam (approximately 5–6 hours, TZS 20,000–35,000), Arusha (approximately 5–6 hours, TZS 25,000–40,000), and Mwanza (approximately 7–9 hours). Reliable operators include Dar Express, Kilimanjaro Express, and Tahmeed Coach.
By air: Dodoma Airport (DOD) serves flights from Dar es Salaam on Precision Air and Air Tanzania. Flights take approximately 50 minutes and cost from USD 60–100 one way. The airport is 6 kilometres west of the city centre; bajaj to the centre costs approximately TZS 5,000–8,000 (USD 2–3), taxi TZS 15,000–25,000 (USD 6–10).
Currency and ATMs: CRDB, NMB, and Barclays ATMs are available in the city centre. USD is not widely accepted at budget and mid-range properties - expect to pay in TZS. Higher-end hotels accept USD or card.
Climate: Dodoma is hot and dry for much of the year. The rainy season runs December–March (short rains) and April–May (long rains). Outside rainy season, temperatures can reach 35°C by mid-afternoon. Rooms with air conditioning are strongly recommended from October through March; fans are adequate from June through August.
Food near the city centre: Dodoma’s food scene is limited compared to Dar or Arusha. The Jacaranda Street area has local restaurants serving chapati, nyama choma (grilled meat), and ugali with various relishes. The Dodoma Hotel restaurant is the most reliable option for travellers wanting a set menu with recognisable dishes.
Day trip to Kondoa Rock Art Sites: Allow a full day. The 155-kilometre drive north on the B143 highway takes approximately 2.5–3 hours each way in dry season, longer during or after rains. Hire a 4WD vehicle in Dodoma (approximately USD 120–160 per day with driver) or join a guided day trip. The site entry fee is approximately USD 15–20 per person. Visit the Antiquities Division office in Kondoa town to arrange an official guide - the art panels are scattered across the hillside and difficult to find without one.
Dodoma vs Dar es Salaam for Government Business
If you have a choice of base for parliamentary or ministry meetings, Dodoma is increasingly the practical option - most government functions now happen here rather than Dar. The city is noticeably quieter, traffic is minimal by East African standards, and hotel rates are 20–40% lower than comparable Dar es Salaam properties. The trade-off is a much smaller restaurant and entertainment scene. Most travellers find one to three nights in Dodoma is sufficient before returning to the coast or heading north.
